Reach Out And Make Change strives to provide social activists with the resources they need to cultivate change within their own communities and abroad.

Mia Farrow begins hunger strike

Actress Mia Farrow will be fasting on a diet of only water beginning April 27, 2009 as a personal expression of outrage for the world’s inaction for the victims of Darfur, Sudan.

As part of the Darfur Fast for Life initiative, Farrow will fast for as long as 21 days, with grassroots activists following along, some dieting on refugee rations and others solely on water. “And when I can no longer continue,” Mia says, “I pray another will take my place, and another, until finally there is justice and peace for Darfur’s people.”

Over the last month, the genocide in Darfur has grown exponentially dire. Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir was indicted on counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, 16 aid agencies were expelled from the region, and food, water, medicine, and shelter supplies have run out in the refugee camps. Already hundreds of thousand have died. Yet the world continues to do nothing.

That’s why Mia Farrow, and other influential leaders and activists are participating in Darfur Fast for Life - to show the world their outrage at the inaction for the victims of Darfur.

Farrow is urging world leaders to pressure the Government of Sudan to re-admit all expelled agencies from the area, and give aid worked unimpeded access to the refugee population before they begin to die in numbers that could dwarf the Rwandan genocide.

She also calls upon President Obama and other leaders to help build a credible peace process that can end the suffering in Darfur.

Others including Gloria White-Hammond, chairwoman of the Save Darfur Coalition, John Prendergast, co-founder of the ENOUGH Project and Pam Omidyar, founder of the Omidyar Network, are publically supporting Farrow’s efforts to stop the genocide in Darfur.
